Make the Most of a Small Kitchen

A small kitchen can seem frustrating and even overwhelming when you're not sure how to utilize the space.

Here are some great tips to make the most of your kitchen area.

  1. Floor to ceiling storage is the biggest difference in a small kitchen space. Using larger cabinets, like forty-four inch cabinets, will make the most of every inch of your kitchen. Shelves are great to use for smaller items, or baking utensils. A pot rack will free up space in your cabinets and adds a decorating flare to your kitchen.
  2. Believe it or not, storing food can be decorative. Using tins for spices and canisters for your staples (like flour, sugar, coffee ect.) means you don't have to hide your goods and they are within easy reach for you when cooking.
  3. The magic triangle, what is it? Your stove, refrigerator and sink should be placed within a step or two of each other, creating a triangle. This simple, first step of organization will help make your kitchen more efficient and prevents it from feeling small.
  4. Store the stuff you use less frequently (like punch bowls or large platters) outside the kitchen. You can use space in your dining room, a closet in your spare bedroom or in your basement, in labeled plastic containers. for easy access. This will help free up the limited space that you have your kitchen.
  5. Clean colors (colors that have no gray or black undertones to it) and emphasizing your windows will make any small space look larger. Natural light with the right colors will make a huge difference in your small kitchen space.

The biggest thing to remember is to accept chaos.  If your kitchen is small and crowded, make it fun and small and crowded! A crammed kitchen can also be a cozy one, as long as you know where everything is.  Your creative juices will really flow just by trying one of these tips in your kitchen.
